Newspapers

[edit]

Do people think we should list gay newspapers here too if they aren't dailies? According to Pink Triangle Press, Xtra! (and its sister publications) are newspapers, but according to magazine, a magazine is a "periodical publication containing a variety of articles on various subjects. Magazines are typically published weekly, twice-monthly or monthly, and often have some colour-printed content and coated paper. "Journal" is sometimes used in reference to a magazine." All the Xtra! publications are biweekly, though in newspaper format. I don't know about the Sydney Star Observer but it sounds like a newspaper too. Exploding Boy 12:17, Feb 16, 2004 (UTC)

Actually, I'm thinking that since there is not, to the best of my knowledge, a daily "gay" newspaper anywhere in the world perhaps gay papers are best put here... Exploding Boy
The Sydney Star Observer is a weekly. It's in newspaper format, but nearly all the queer mags in Australia are (if not all). That's probably due to financial issues - the market here is obviously much smaller than in the states. Additionally, they were nearly all bought out by the one company than went broke, so I don't know what is and isn't still alive anymore (for instance, BrotherSister, which I listed, is gone I believe). Pornographic gay magazines

[edit]

Should we include pornographic gay magazines? Voyager640 06:16, 31 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

I guess it would be ok? What do others think? Exploding Boy 09:12, May 31, 2004 (UTC)
Note that List_of_pornographic_magazines#Marketed_to_gay_and_bisexual_men pretty much covers the topic of gay porn.—Teahot (talk) 11:56, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Problematic ISSN

[edit]

I sent email to the publisher of the following journal almost 2 months ago, asking for a valid ISSN. Having not yet heard back, I am going to remove the ISSN since I have not been able to locate it anywhere. Kind Regards, Keesiewonder talk 01:04, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Trade: Queer Things (Toronto; Trade; ISSN 1492-0021 Parameter error in {{issn}}: Invalid ISSN. {{Please check ISSN|Calculated check digit (6) doesn't match given.}})
Similar magazine found: Trade : queer things. Trade. ISSN 1492-0018. {{cite journal}}: Missing or empty |title= (help); this may not be the same thing but suspiciously similar ISSN. Now added to list.—Teahot (talk) 12:20, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Newspapers vs magazines

[edit]

The previous question brings up a good point. Do we want to separate newspapers from magazines in this list? It would make for sense to me. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tdempsey (talkcontribs) 00:00, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Probably not. There can be a pretty fine line in reality between publications that call themselves magazines versus newspapers. If a periodical is weekly rather than monthly, this can be added to the listing. For example, Boyz magazine is a free weekly with TV listings and a horoscope, a few years ago it was even printed in broadsheet format but still called itself a magazine.—Teahot (talk) 06:40, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move

List of LGBT publicationsList of LGBT periodicals — The current term "publications" may be interpreted to be any website, blog, forum or document without an ISSN or official recognition. The term periodical has a stronger definition of a regular publication of magazine or newspaper format. — Teahot (talk) 10:49, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

[edit]
Move now made after a couple of days as it didn't seem that contentious. If you have a retrospective objection, please discuss it here before moving the page back.—Teahot (talk) 18:24, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sites that should be removed from the list

[edit]

Checking the UK section I noted that http://www.queeruk.net/ had been included. This is a forum site rather than a publication, as a rule should any site that has no regular printed publication associated with it be removed?—Teahot (talk) 06:56, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Using mag template

[edit]

{{mag}} has been created to provide an easy citation template using the same format as {{citation}} but without having to setup all the parameter names. The format is: {{mag|Magazine Title|Publisher|ISSN|OCLC|Website}}.

Unwanted terms can be dropped off right to left, so for example {{mag|Gay Times}} would be the simplest usage and {{mag|Gay Times|||50679074}} for a title with just the OCLC number. Using this is helpful rather than mandatory as it forces a style in standard use across Wikipedia.—Teahot (talk) 07:34, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

After comparing with List of pornographic magazines I have adapted the style to highlight title only as this works much better in a list format (as the standard citation format was not actually designed for magazine titles).—Teahot (talk) 12:37, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There is an RfC regarding the standardization of journal lists names. Please comment at Talk:List of journals#RFC. Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 01:37, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Use of {{List journal}}

[edit]

Many of the entries until recently used {{cite journal}}, but with no title= parameter, generatring citation errors. I have converted all these uses to the newly created {{list journal}}, which duplicates all the relevant parameters of cite journal but is adapted to making an entry in a list of journals or publications.
