Pat Hingle (born July 19, 1924)is an American character actor who has appeared in hundreds of television shows and feature films. His first film was On The Waterfront in 1954. He typically plays tough authority figures. Hingle is a close personal friend of Clint Eastwood and has appeared in three of his films, Hang 'em High (1968), The Gauntlet (1977) and Sudden Impact (1983). Mister Hingle served in the United States Navy during both World War II and the Korean War. Hingle was originally to play Burt Lancaster's role in the 1960 film Elmer Gentry (which would win Lancaster an Oscar), but shortly before filming began he suffered a horrible accident. He fell ten stories down a deserted elevator shaft and survived. However, his recovery took over a year. In recent years, Mister Hingle played "Commissioner Gordon" in the Batman series of feature films. Hingle also came to Dodge City as a physician to replace "Doc Adams" who had gone "back east" for additional medical trainingin the "Gunsmoke"television series.

Pat's missing finger

[edit]

I've noticed that Hingle is missing the pinkie finger of his left hand. Does anyone know how that happened? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.51.240.194 (talk) 04:09, August 29, 2007 (UTC)
