Boobapedia

I was trying to find sources for the Booba (show) article but I suddenly found Boobapedia, is this counted as a reliable source and is it related to MediaWiki of some sort? 🍗TheNuggeteer🍗 10:37, 3 August 2024 (UTC)

@TheNuggeteer That's a Wiki, so no. Its "about" page makes it clear that any user can add content. Its the same reason that you can't cite Wikipedia as a reliable source. @Pranay030 Articles are not indexed by search engines until reviewed by the New pages patrol, or until they have been in mainspace for 90 days. NPP is heavily backlogged at present, as you will see from the link. If you had used the WP:AfC process, the article would have been marked as reviewed when accepted. How to deal with the inconsistencies in Security Council membership maps

I'm trying to fix problems in the series of images UNSC <year>.svg (e.g. File:UNSC 2023.svg), and I'm not sure how best to go about it. These images show the UN Security Council membership in a given year on a world map. There’s one for each year going back to 1967. (The ones before 2010 have different names.) I want to make the following improvements:

• Disputed territories are treated inconsistently. Some maps show Taiwan as part of China (e.g. File:UNSC 2022.svg), some don't (e.g. File:UNSC 2023.svg); some show Crimea as part of Russia (e.g. File:UNSC 2022.svg), some don't (e.g. File:UNSC 2023.svg). IMHO, the maps should follow UN practice, which is to treat Taiwan as part of China but to reject Russia's claim to Crimea; but whatever they show, it should be consistent across the years.
• Nominal file sizes differ. Some maps specify 2,754 × 1,398 pixels (e.g. File:UNSC 2023.svg), some 1,104 × 566 pixels (e.g. File:UNSC 2020.svg), some 940 × 415 pixels (e.g. File:UNSC 2011.svg).
• Correlated with the different nominal sizes are slight graphical differences. The smaller maps use a lighter shade of gray and draw the map border either more strongly or not at all.
• The maps were apparently coloured using Inkscape, dispersing lots of changes throughout the file. That makes it unnecessarily difficult to assess what’s being coloured and to change it consistently. It would be much preferable to just have two CSS styles at the top, for permanent and non-permanent members, so that for instance a decision on the treatment of disputed territories could easily be applied to all the maps by a simple one-line change using a text editor or shell script.

The maps File:UNSC 2024.svg and File:UNSC 2025.svg were missing; I created them based on File:BlankMap-World.svg, using simple CSS styles at the top and following UN practice (as described above). I have a script that can automatically generate these for all years. I also wanted to upload new versions of the existing maps but then realized that I don’t have permission to do that and that it might not conform with commons:COM:OVERWRITE ("Changes to a file that are likely to be contested should be uploaded to a separate filename" – I guess changing the treatment of disputed territories might be contested). But uploading these new maps to separate filenames seems like a bad solution. I’m in the process of standardizing the infoboxes of the articles on Security Council elections (which use these maps) using templates (see e.g. 2022 United Nations Security Council election). When I’m done with that, switching to a different series of filenames would be a simple change in the template. But these maps are also used in other projects – about three uses per map on average (e.g. File:UNSC_2019.svg#globalusage). Those would remain inconsistent; or, if all those uses were switched to the new files, the effect would be the same as overwriting the old files, just with a lot more work. There must be some other way to fix something like this than to engage in discussions in a dozen different language projects until there’s a consensus for the change in all of them. Would it be an option to overwrite the files and leave messages in the other projects about the change so they can restore the previous version if they don’t agree with the change? Wikipedia Information and Subject Pages

How does one request the addition of, or create content to be added to Wikipedia? Info requested would be biographical and career related in nature for a well known, previously published and promoted artist that passed away in 2022. It appears from the FAQ that I can create a page based on previously available and quotable info. How best to begin?

Anybody may create an article in Wikipedia; but My earnest advice to new editors is to not even think about trying to create an article until you have spent several weeks - at least - learning about how Wikipedia works by making improvements to existing articles. Once you have understood core policies such as verifiability, neutral point of view, reliable, independent sources, and notability, and experienced how we handle disagreements with other editors (the Bold, Revert, Discuss cycle), then you might be ready to read your first article carefully, and try creating a draft.

Creating an article begins with finding suitable sources to establish that the subject meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability: if such sources do not exist, then attempting to create an article about the person will be a waste of everybody's time. Note that Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources. Mistakes in the article Notes on Muscovite Affairs

The article contains several notable errors, which I corrected, but my corrections were not accepted and I was warned that my actions could damage the content of the article. I was directed to the article's talk page to discuss my comments, but no one responded to my request. All errors remain in the article:

1. The article declares that Muscovy was one of the states into which Kyivan Rus broke up. This statement is false. Leaving the name "Kyivvan Rus", which appeared only in the 19th century, out of parentheses, I should note that the disintegration of Rus' dates back to the 11th century, while the first mention of Moscow dates back to 1147 - the 12th century. Moreover, the Muscovite State did not exist then. The Muscovite state emerged in the 13th century and strengthened during Horde rule. 2. Herberstein distinguished the concept of Russia (to which he attributed the territory of the former Rus' - modern Ukraine - within the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Crown of Poland) and Muscovy - the state under the rule of the Moscow princes which became a core of the Russian Empire and modern Russia, which was reflected in his notes. Therefore, the identification of Muscovy with Russia in this article is incorrect. According to this logic, the concept of Rus' (or according to the author's reading "Kievan Rus") should be replaced by Ukraine. And everywhere in the text of the article "Russian" regarding "Kievan Rus'" should be replaced by "Ukrainian" (for example, Ukrainian principalities). As we can see, the identification of concepts "for convenience" provokes confusion and factual errors in the future. 3. Accordingly, it is incorrect to write that Herberstein was sent with a mission to Russia. After all, Russia did not exist then. It would be more accurate to write that he was sent to Muscovy (now Russia). The same applies to the "Russian Tsar" or the Russians. Local people and the Tsar of Muscovy were more appropriate.

It is not very likely that anybody reading this page has any particular knowledge about this subject.

If you look at the history of the article Notes on Muscovite Affairs, you will see that @Mellk reverted your edits with the comment "Unsourced changes" - twice (which means that you were edit warring, by reintroducing them without discussion: see WP:BRD). As far as I can tell, that is what they meant by "disruptive editing": not the content of your edit but the fact that you introduced information without citing sources, and repeated this.

You did the right thing by opening a discussion on the article's talk page; but since you didn't ping any editors, it is quite possible that nobody has seen the discussion.

I have pinged Mellk here; and it might be a good idea to put a note on WT:WikiProject Russia pointing to the discussion on the talk page. ColinFine (talk) 21:10, 3 August 2024 (UTC)

The word Jews has nothing to the with the notion of 'nation'.

The statement is backed up by citations to no fewer than five sources. The article is doing what it is supposed to do, and summarising what reliable sources say.

If you think that it is not accurately representing those sources, or you have other reliable mainstream sources which say something different, please open a discussion on the article's talk page. Citing single source for list

Is there a way to clearly indicate that a list was created based on a single source or that the source can be used to verify the contents of the list? If the inline citation is added to the last entry it appears that it only supports that entry and re-citing the source after each entry seems excessive. Perhaps I'm overthinking it and in most cases the list doesn't need a citation per WP:MINREF. I mostly come across this for cast lists. TipsyElephant (talk) 01:10, 4 August 2024 (UTC)

What to do when an editor is potentially connected to the subject of the article?

I'm currently editing an article for an upcoming election and I believe one of the other contributors is potentially connected to one of the candidates, or even is the candidate himself. Doccia porcelain (rename)

Our article for Doccia porcelain should be named more aptly. The current name is not particularly helpful. Apparently the entity became "Richard-Ginori" in the late 1800s, and is now called "Ginori 1735" (following a more recent rebranding by the current owner). The company's registered name appears to be "Richard Ginori s.r.l." (no hyphen), however Italian wikipedia has it as Richard-Ginori (with hyphen). Of the three (Richard-Ginori, Richard Ginori, Ginori 1735), which should be used? -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 08:28, 4 August 2024 (UTC)

This one is less obvious. "Richard-Ginori" seems to be the logical name choice – however, complicating matters further, we have two entities on wikidata: Ginori 1735 (Q48800364) and Doccia porcelain (Q1061931). dark mode hyperlink color has insufficient contrast

I love dark mode and use something like it while reading books on screen, however Wikipedia text has many hyperlinks and the light blue color is insufficiently bright to enable smooth reading of the aggregate text... How to unhide a hidden file/folder to nominate an article for A-class review

I have nominated several articles for A-class reviews, but of late I’ve been spinning my wheels trying to nominate SPARS for an A-Class review. The problem: I'm unable to unhide the hidden file/folder or drop-box in WikiProject banner shell|class=GA|1= so I can add the required nomination information. I have an iMac/Apple desktop computer with a Macintosh hard drive. I've looked at a lot of information on the subject, but none of it provides how-to information in a sequential, step-by-step manner. On Talk:SPARS I can click "show" at "Military history" to see "Additional information" and then click "show" there to see "This article is currently undergoing an A-Class review." @Pendright: You are already in Desktop so you have a "Mobile view" link instead. Mobile has a "Learn more about this page" link to display WikiProject banners. Does that work for you? In Desktop, do you see the text "Military history"? Do you see the text "Additional information" below it? If there is no visible "show" then try hovering your mouse to the right of those texts near the right side of the box and see if there is something you can click anyway. Collapsing Template:Infobox nutritional value

Hello! At Template_talk:Infobox_nutritional_value#Needs_to_be_collapsible, multiple people including myself have noted that the template often contains so much information that it takes up an inordinate amount of space on pages that call it. See, for example, Red cabbage#Culinary, where this template pushes other contents to the bottom of the page and creates excess text-free whitespace there. I asked about this at Template_talk:Infobox#Collapsibility?, and the responses indicated that collapsing subsections would be an option. Obligations to comply with PROD contested by p-blocked editor

WP:DEPROD mentions a tag may be restored if removed by a banned user or blocked user evading a block. I take that to imply that enforcing sanctions overrides the principle that PRODs must only be used when no opposition is expected, and thus you don't have to remove your PROD if you don't want to. But others may disagree. There does not appear to be any explicit guidance either way. – Teratix ₵ 10:01, 5 August 2024 (UTC)

I placed the PROD. The requestor in question is blocked from directly editing main space and requested by request edit to DEPROD it. Given he's given step-by-step on how to do it, I feel like he's looking for inexperienced editor who isn't aware of the totality of situation to come along and just do it. Table moved to bottom of the page

Hi, I was updating the past seasons table under the past seasons tab on the Risborough Rangers FC page. Even though the editing says that the table is under the past seasons tab, when published it isn't so gets moved to the bottom of the page. I am unable to work out what I've done to make this happen. The message says that you haven't given a title for the website. Going to http://billwall.phpwebhosting.com/articles/Chess%20players%20who%20died%20young.htm, I can see that there is no obvious title: I suppose the title is "Chess players who died young". But I see absolutely no reason to regard that as a reliable source, and so it should not be cited at all, for any article. ColinFine (talk) 20:58, 5 August 2024 (UTC)

The title of the page is "Chess players who died young", but the name of the site is Bill Wall's Chess Page (one can often determine the name of a site by going to what's before the first backslash after http:// in the page's URL—in this case, http://billwall.phpwebhosting.com). Is there a way to see the "Compare versions" view in the editor before submitting?

With long articles with detail-oriented content (tables of data that are easier to download, edit locally, then re-upload), I find I'm submitting, checking revision changes, then going back to correct punctuation and spelling changes. Problem with search function

When I entered the term "rutamarin" in the "Search Wikipedia" box, the search function returned at least 500 hits, first stating that no page for this term exists. The first hit is legitimate, but all the remaining hits are to the same text, and that text doesn't appear in any of the referenced pages (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=rutamarin&title=Special%3ASearch&ns0=1). My request is that this search be modified so that only the first hit occurs, and with none of the remaining hits being returned. As a pure guess, I suspect that this result is produced by a bug in the search function which may well cause inappropriate results to be returned from searches of other terms, possibly ones like "rutamarin" that lack their own article pages. @Mitality: The term really is on all those pages. It is inside the "TRP channel modulators" box at the bottom of the page. This box is collapsed by default. The search function cannot know how useful/not useful this is to any particular user. -Arch dude (talk) 19:46, 5 August 2024 (UTC)

Posted on talk page about modifying article title. No one responding. What to do?

I posted on a talk page: "Who decided to call it the 'Latvian Hockey Higher League'?" I had concluded that in English the league should referred to as the "Latvian Premier League". Seems no one is coming to talk. Low readership, I think. What to do? Try to contact one of the very few recent editors to discuss the title change? Or just go ahead and make the change? user:Gragox, created the article in 2006 as Latvian Hockey League, and was active as of a few months ago. User:Dukurs moved it to its current name in 2016 and was still active as of just a few days ago. Maybe one of them will comment now that they have been pinged here. You could also formally propose a move (see WP:RM) on the talk page, or just WP:BEBOLD and move it if you are confident in the name. Meters (talk) 06:45, 6 August 2024 (UTC)

Could I please have help

Could someone please help me move my article to the mainspace from draft, as I am having a lot of trouble doing so.

My article is called The_Desert_Song_(Max_Liebman_Presents), but has the word 'Draft' at the beginning of the name of the article. I am not able to move the article because the name for the article remains the same (even with the extra word 'Draft').

Figaro, you need to submit Draft:The Desert Song (Max Liebman Presents) as a candidate for promotion to article status. However, there's no point doing so any time soon, as the draft says very little that appears to be reliably sourced. (Three sources are specified -- although just what each is referencing is unclear. No, it's right. Su Bingtian has four links to Athletics at the 2020 Summer Olympics – Men's 4 × 100 metres relay which says:

Article dispute

A recent article I wrote that passed draft review and is now in the article space has been nominated for deletion. The article is All Saints Episcopal Church (Carmel-by-the-Sea, California). Looks like there are more delete votes than keep votes.

• How do I prevent this article from deletion and open it up for further discussion?
• If it deleted, how do I appeal the dicesion?
• A third question is, why are there thousands of Category:Articles lacking sources that have been open for years when certain editors choose my article for deletion? Am I an easy target?

Greghenderson2006, this isn't about you, it's about the draft. And yes, I found the decision to !vote "delete" fairly easy. Most editors are here to help improve Wikipedia. The argument "I've found some poor articles on Wikipedia, so I'm justified in creating another equally poor article" does not go down well with us. Maproom (talk) 20:55, 6 August 2024 (UTC)

Finer grained difference.

When I do a diff between two versions of an article it shows me a word that changed, I'd like to see the changes at the letter/byte level. For example, if the difference between two versions of an article looks like a change from the Greek Letters Phi Beta Kappa to Phi Beta K, that would look exactly the same as if someone changed the Greek letters Phi Beta Kappa to Phi B Kappa. Different letters were changed, but the diff look exactly the same, simply highlighting the three letters. (I flipped a coin between asking here and asking at the Village Pump, so I won't take a "go to the Village Pump" as a bad result.)Naraht (talk) 21:04, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
